Devon College Reports Scabies Outbreak
A Devon college has confirmed seven cases of scabies within its student community, all diagnosed by a health professional.
Scabies is a skin infection caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite, which burrows into the skin and triggers intense itching due to an allergic reaction to the parasite and its waste. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) states the infection is spread through close physical contact, including sexual contact.
According to the NHS and UKHSA, scabies requires treatment to clear up and does not resolve on its own. Treatment is recommended for all household members of someone diagnosed, even if they don’t exhibit symptoms.
Symptoms include a persistent, intensely itchy rash, particularly at night, and a raised rash or spots. While not typically serious, prompt treatment is crucial to prevent further spread.
Individuals diagnosed with scabies can return to work or school after beginning treatment, provided they avoid close contact for the first 24 hours. Children under five can return to nursery or pre-school 24 hours after thier initial treatment.
