Title: Covid-19 & Flu Vaccinations: Booking Guide & Risk Groups

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Flu and COVID-19 Vaccinations Begin in Region Uppsala

Vaccinations against seasonal flu and COVID-19 are now underway in Region Uppsala, beginning October 14th. Anna Gillman, assistant infection control physician, emphasizes teh importance of staying up-to-date with vaccinations, stating, “The vaccine is a fresh product. If you are older or in the risk group, you need to replenish, so that you are protected against the variants that are current right now.”

Region Uppsala is following the guidance of the Public Health authority, recommending free annual flu vaccinations for all residents aged 65 and older.Individuals 75 years and older are also recommended and offered free COVID-19 vaccination.

The recommendation extends to younger individuals at higher risk of severe illness, including those with heart or lung conditions. gillman stresses that those in risk groups, especially those under 65, should proactively book thier vaccination appointments, as they will not automatically receive a summons or reminder. Examples of risk groups include individuals with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or compromised immune systems.

This year, the recommended age for COVID-19 vaccination has been adjusted to 75 years and older, based on assessments of limited benefit for younger populations.

Here’s how to book an appointment:

* 80 years and older: Appointments have been pre-booked at a local health centre and a summons has been sent.
* 65-79 years: A text message reminder has been sent with instructions on booking at a health center, the Uppsala vaccination unit, or a private vaccination provider.
* Under 65 in a risk group: Appointments can be booked directly at a health center, the Uppsala vaccination unit, or a private vaccination provider.

For those under 65 who do not fall into a risk group but wish to be vaccinated, options are available at health centers and private providers starting December 2nd, though COVID-19 vaccine availability is limited.
