Cattle Ship “Spiridon II” Turns Back to Montevideo Amid Mounting Animal Welfare Concerns
MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY – After weeks of international outcry over horrific conditions onboard, the cargo ship Spiridon II has reversed course and is returning to Montevideo, Uruguay, with its cargo of approximately 2,900 cattle. The decision follows a report by Sky news detailing widespread suffering and death among the animals, prompting renewed pressure on authorities to end the prolonged sea voyage.
the Animal Welfare Foundation (AWF) brought the plight of the cattle to public attention, reporting at least 48 bovine deaths and the births of roughly 140 calves during the voyage. Approximately 90 of those calves are unaccounted for, presumed to have perished within the shipS confines. The incident underscores growing concerns about the ethics and viability of long-distance live animal transport, a practise critics say inflicts unacceptable cruelty.
The Spiridon II was initially permitted to take on supplies in mid-November but was not allowed to offload the animals. Now, the ship faces a multi-week journey back across the Atlantic, prolonging the ordeal for the remaining cattle.
“The fate of thes roughly 2,900 cattle exemplifies the systemic issues within the live export trade,” stated Boada Saña of AWF. The institution is advocating for an immediate cessation of maritime animal shipments and increased protections for animals within the industry.
Media reports indicate a potential solution is being explored: the possible resale of the cattle to Ukraine. However, the future of the animals remains uncertain as they continue their arduous journey.
