american consumers shattered online spending records on Black Friday, reaching $11.8 billion, according to data from Adobe Analytics. This marks a significant increase from the $10.8 billion spent online during Black Friday 2024, signaling a continued shift towards e-commerce for the holiday shopping season. Adobe, which tracks over 1 trillion visits to U.S. retail websites, reported that online shoppers spent approximately $12.5 million per minute between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The surge in online activity underscores black Friday’s evolution into “a major e-commerce moment, as more shoppers opt to stay home and take advantage of deals,” Adobe stated. Looking ahead, adobe projects Cyber Monday, December 1, will be even larger, with an anticipated $14.2 billion in online spending. Thes figures provide an early indication of broader holiday shopping trends, with Adobe forecasting total holiday spending to reach $253.4 billion this year, up from $241.1 billion in 2024.
While salesforce also tracked Black friday spending, reporting $79 billion globally – including $18 billion in the U.S.- their data suggests the growth might potentially be influenced by price increases.Salesforce noted a 6% and 3% year-over-year increase in global and U.S.spending respectively, alongside a 7% rise in prices and a 1% decrease in order volumes.
Both Adobe and Salesforce are observing a growing impact of artificial intelligence on holiday shopping. Salesforce reported that AI and AI agents influenced $22 billion in global sales between Thanksgiving and Black Friday. The picture regarding in-store shopping remains mixed, with RetailNext reporting a 3.4% nationwide decline in foot traffic, while Pass_by indicated a 1.17% overall increase, and a 7.9% increase in department stores.
