Barcelona President Vows Historic Messi Tribute as Star Hints at 2026 World Cup Absence
Barcelona, Spain – Barcelona president Joan Laporta has pledged to deliver an unprecedented tribute to Lionel Messi upon his eventual retirement, while the Argentina captain has suggested the 2026 World Cup may be beyond his reach.
Laporta, speaking at an event hosted by la Vanguardia, stated the club intends to honor Messi with ”the most lovely tribute ever seen for the greatest player in the history of football adn of Barca.” He also indicated plans to erect statues commemorating club legends including László Kubala, Johan Cruyff, Messi, and Ronaldinho. “The ideal tribute would be 105,000 Barcelona fans in a full stadium thanking him for everything he has done for Barca,” Laporta said. “It could be a beautiful moment.”
Meanwhile, Messi told ESPN Argentina he hopes to participate in the 2026 World Cup, but conceded it’s possible he will onyl attend as a spectator. “I hope I can be there. I’ve said before that I’d love to be there. At worst, I’ll be there watching it live, but it will be special,” he stated.
Despite potential personal limitations,Messi expressed confidence in Argentina’s chances at the tournament in North America,citing the team’s “extraordinary players” and the impact of manager Lionel Scaloni. “The mentality everyone has… It’s a squad full of winners, with strong mindsets, who wont to win more, and that’s contagious,” Messi explained.He also highlighted the positive atmosphere fostered by Scaloni and his staff, and the ease with which new players integrate into the squad. “Argentina needs to take advantage of this moment,” he added. ”Coming off winning the World Cup gives you confidence and relief to prepare (for) competitions differently.”
