Breakthroughs in Prostate Cancer Treatment Offer Hope for High Cure Rates
Sherbrooke,Quebec – Patients diagnosed with prostate cancer now have reason for optimism,as advancements in detection and surgical techniques at the Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke (CHUS) are contributing to an estimated 80% cure rate, according to leading urologists. The positive outlook comes as the hospital seeks to expand its technological capabilities to further improve outcomes and reduce patient wait times.
prostate cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Canadian men. Early and accurate diagnosis, coupled with increasingly elegant treatment options, are dramatically improving survival rates. The CHUS urology team’s success highlights the critical role of specialized care and ongoing investment in medical technology. This progress offers renewed hope for the approximately 21,000 Canadian men diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, and underscores the importance of regular screenings and prompt medical attention.
Dr.García Freire, head of Urology at CHUS, revealed the scope of the department’s work, performing between 200 and 250 radical prostatectomies annually, alongside approximately 680 transrectal biopsies and 340 MRI-guided fusion biopsies. These fusion biopsies, utilizing advanced imaging, boast a detection rate of 60 to 65%.
Currently, the service provides follow-up care for 80 to 100 patients each week, while together treating other urological cancers, including those affecting the bladder and kidneys.
Looking ahead, Dr. García Freire emphasized the need for continued investment in technology. “Hopefully we can have a new robot as soon as possible. That would allow us to improve results and reduce waiting times,” he stated.
