Beijing Thru an Expat’s Lens: Branding Consultant Shagi Shares His Ideal Day
BEIJING - For Shagi, a long-term Beijing resident originally from The Commonwealth of Dominica, a perfect day in the capital blends local experiences with familiar comforts. The full-time dad adn part-time marketing/branding consultant recently shared his ideal 24 hours with The Beijinger, offering a glimpse into how he navigates and enjoys life in the city.
This “24 Hours in Beijing” series asks prominent figures in the capital how they would spend a full day. Shagi’s itinerary reveals a passion for exploring Beijing’s vibrant arts scene, savoring its diverse culinary offerings, and balancing work with family life. His routine highlights a unique outlook shaped by his island roots and adopted home.
Shagi’s day begins with a 6:30 am run at Side Park in Lidu, accompanied by a podcast or Hit FM 88.7. Following a shower, he cycles to The Daily Bagel for breakfast, declaring it “the best in the city.” The morning continues with a ride through the hutongs, a coffee break at SUR Cabo overlooking Baitasi, and lunch at Furongji, where he praises the “epic” staff and indulges in dim sum alongside cookies from The Bake shop on the rooftop – a spot he uses for brainstorming and work notes.
the afternoon is dedicated to the 798 Arts District, with Shagi citing 798CUBE, UCCA, Red Gate, Sauce Zhan, and SoulGoods as his favorite galleries and shops. He then enjoys a Spanish Latte w/Coconut Milk from % Arabica before heading home for dinner with his family. If childcare allows, he and his wife enjoy an evening out, perhaps catching a show at Modernista or BlueNote Beijing, followed by drinks at Hide & Seek.
