These are just a few of the delightfully quirky questions honored last night at the 2025 Ig Nobel Prizes,an annual celebration of research that makes you laugh,then think.
Established in 1991, the Ig Nobels are a playful parody of the prestigious Nobel Prizes. They recognize “achievements that first make people laugh and then make them think,” according to organizers at Improbable Research. The awards aren’t about dismissing genuine scientific inquiry; rather,they highlight the importance of curiosity and unconventional approaches to problem-solving.
The ceremony itself is famously unconventional. Winners are treated to miniature operas, engaging scientific demonstrations, and the challenging ”24/7″ lectures – requiring them to explain their complex work in both 24 seconds and just seven words.
