Balibó Five Commemorated as Legacy of Support for Timor-Leste Endures
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA – October 16, 2025 - Fifty years after the deaths of five Australian-based journalists in Balibó, Timor-Leste, a commemorative oration and fundraising event is underway, reaffirming Australia’s enduring connection to the nation and the ongoing work to support its communities. The Jean McLean Oration, hosted by Victoria University in collaboration with the Balibó House Trust, marks the solemn anniversary of the October 16, 1975, killings of Greg Shackleton, Gary Cunningham, Brian Peters, Malcolm Rennie, and Anthony Stewart.
The deaths of the “Balibó Five” remain a pivotal moment in the history of Australia’s relationship with Timor-Leste, exposing the brutal realities of the Indonesian invasion and occupation. Today’s commemoration isn’t simply a remembrance of a tragic loss, but a continuation of decades-long efforts to honor their memory through tangible support for the people of Balibó, focusing on vital improvements to health, education, and local development. The event underscores the lasting impact of these journalists’ sacrifice and the importance of continued solidarity with Timor-Leste as it navigates its future.
The Oration, named in honour of The Honourable Jean McLean AM for her distinguished career as a politician and activist and her significant contributions to Timor-Leste, is being led by the Balibó House Trust, chaired by VU Chancellor the Honourable Steve Bracks.The Trust has worked for over two decades directly with the community of Balibó, providing crucial assistance and fostering sustainable partnerships.
