Tim Curry, Rocky Horror Picture Show Icon, Dies at 80

August 26, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

British actor Tim Curry died at the age of 80 on August 25, at his home in Los Angeles, according to initial reports from TMZ. Renowned globally for originating the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and portraying the terrifying clown Pennywise in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King’s It, Curry leaves behind a transformative legacy across stage, film, and television.

From Cheshire to the Birmingham Stage

Born in Cheshire, England, on April 19, 1946, Curry pursued rigorous theatrical and literary training early in life. He graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1968 with a degree in drama and English literature. That same year, his professional trajectory shifted when he secured a role in the original cast of the musical Hair.

That initial stage production facilitated his meeting with Richard O’Brien. O’Brien subsequently cast Curry as the charismatic, corset-wearing scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the cult phenomenon The Rocky Horror Show.

Mastering the Art of the Screen Transformation

Beyond his defining theatrical work, Curry established an extensive filmography defined by striking visual transformations and powerful character acting. In 1985, he collaborated with director Ridley Scott on the fantasy feature Legend, stepping beneath heavy prosthetics to portray the Lord of Darkness, complete with towering horns and scarlet skin.

Decades of television and cinematic projects followed, punctuated by his chilling turn in 1990 as Pennywise the Dancing Clown in the television miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s It. Across more than four decades of performing, Curry cultivated a reputation for fearlessly embracing eccentric, multifaceted characters that defied traditional casting conventions.

Enduring Health Battles and Legacy

The later chapters of Curry’s life were shaped by significant health challenges. In 2012, Curry suffered a stroke that required brain surgery.
