Three Alexander Brothers Sentenced to 30 Years for Sex Trafficking
Three brothers convicted of using luxury real estate and wealth to drug and rape dozens of women were each sentenced to 30 years in federal prison on Tuesday, theage.com.au reported. Twins Oren and Alon Alexander, 39, and their brother Tal Alexander, 40, received the punishment from US District Judge Valerie E. Caproni in a Manhattan courtroom after hearing emotional statements from 11 accusers.
Victims Describe How Assaults Shattered Their Lives
During the sentencing hearing, victims described how the assaults shattered their lives. One woman, using a pseudonym to protect her identity, stood feet from the brothers to recount the impact of the attacks. Eleven women spoke in court, while another statement was read aloud by a prosecutor, according to court proceedings. A victim using the pseudonym Katie Moore told the court that the brothers treated women and girls as though their lives and bodies meant nothing.
Federal prosecutors stated that at least 70 women reported being assaulted by one or more of the brothers over a two-decade span in locations including the Hamptons on Long Island and Aspen, Colorado. Trial evidence showed the men used their wealth and social status to lure victims to luxury properties before incapacitating them with drugs or force.
Judge Caproni Imposes Prison Terms and Rejects Defense Arguments
Judge Caproni compared the brothers to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, noting the sharp contrast between character letters describing them as gentlemen and the credible accounts of predatory behavior presented by victims. The judge dismissed the defendants’ denials as lies, stating that their conduct was monstrous.
Defense attorneys had requested a 15-year sentence, arguing that the men had stopped their illicit conduct and were now dedicated fathers. Federal prosecutors pushed for life imprisonment, citing the callousness of the crimes where the defendants allegedly laughed and bragged after brief assaults.
Each brother addressed the court prior to the sentencing. While expressing regret over past behavior and remarks made during their youth, all three maintained their innocence regarding the specific charges of drugging, raping, and trafficking women. Oren Alexander told the court he and his brothers never harmed or trafficked anyone, while Tal Alexander asked to be placed in the same prison facility as his brothers to accommodate family visits.
