The 2018 supernatural horror film The Nun, a spin-off of The Conjuring franchise, began streaming on Netflix on July 2, 2025, according to reports.
Directed by Corin Hardy and written by Gary Dauberman, the film follows a Roman Catholic priest and a nun in her novitiate as they investigate the death of a young nun and confront a demonic force in 1952 Romania. Taissa Farmiga, Demián Bichir and Jonas Bloquet star in the film, with Bonnie Aarons reprising her role as the demonic nun, Valak, first introduced in The Conjuring 2.
The Nun was initially released in the United States on September 7, 2018, and grossed $366 million worldwide on a $22 million budget. At the time of its release, it was the highest-grossing film in The Conjuring universe, a record later surpassed by The Conjuring: Last Rites in 2025. The film’s story originated with James Wan and Gary Dauberman, with a screenplay later refined by Wan and Dauberman. Principal photography took place in Bucharest, Romania, beginning in May 2017.
The film received mixed reviews upon its theatrical release. It is currently available on Netflix in a standard definition format for €4.99 per month with ads, a standard 1080p format for €13.99 per month without ads, or a premium 4K + HDR format with immersive sound for €19.99 per month without ads.
A sequel, The Nun II, was released in 2023.
