Self-imposed Fasting for Weight Loss Carries Risks,Warns Nutritionist
MADRID – Individuals attempting self-directed fasting regimens for weight loss may be jeopardizing their health, according to nutritionist Pablo Ojeda, who cautioned against the growing trend of relying on unverified online advice. Speaking with ABC, Ojeda emphasized the importance of individualized assessment and the potential dangers of ignoring underlying psychological factors impacting eating habits.
Ojeda highlighted a critical, often overlooked aspect of weight management: sleep deprivation. “Before focusing on food you have to order life and schedules,” he stated. He further asserted that a significant majority of those seeking weight loss – approximately 80% – may benefit more from psychological support than a strict dietary plan. “But here also matches that the nutritionist is the one who knows how to assess whether he is a psychologist where that person must be referred,” he added.
The nutritionist also expressed concern over the increasing reliance on artificial intelligence for dietary guidance, noting that AI lacks the capacity to understand the complex personal contexts influencing an individualS relationship with food. “A context lacks a machine, so beware of that because it may harm them instead of helping them,” Ojeda warned.
While acknowledging the potential benefits of supplements like omega 3, magnesium, and creatine for individuals with increased demands or as they age, Ojeda stressed the need for informed and responsible usage. He ultimately underscored the value of consistency and self-commitment over restrictive diets or intense exercise, stating, ”Constance is the most valuable tool.”
