Norwegian actor Simon J. berger has discussed the challenges adn rewards of stepping into the role of Harry Hole, the troubled oslo police detective created by author Jo Nesbø, in the upcoming Netflix series “Exit.” Berger, known for his work in “Young wallstreet” and “Livet etter døden,” revealed the pressure of inheriting a character beloved by millions of readers worldwide.
The “Harry Hole” series, a cornerstone of Scandinavian noir, has captivated audiences with it’s dark, complex narratives and flawed protagonist. Nesbø’s novels have been translated into 40 languages and sold over 50 million copies globally. Adapting such a popular franchise for television presents a unique set of expectations, and Berger acknowledged the weight of responsibility in portraying Hole authentically.
“It’s a huge role to take on, of course,” Berger stated in a recent interview. “Harry is… he’s a mess. But he’s a brilliant mess. And that’s what makes him so captivating. The biggest challenge is to find the balance between the darkness and the vulnerability.” He emphasized the importance of understanding Hole’s internal struggles-his alcoholism, his grief, and his relentless pursuit of justice-to deliver a nuanced performance.
The Netflix adaptation, titled “Exit,” is currently in production and expected to launch in late 2025. It will reportedly cover multiple novels from the series, offering a comprehensive exploration of Hole’s character arc.
