A new generation of in-car devices is transforming how drivers handle emergencies and routine maintenance, with Italian tech firm Virgilio launching a system that diagnoses vehicle issues in real time and connects users directly to roadside assistance.
The system, described by Virgilio as a “digital mechanic” for vehicles, integrates with a car’s onboard diagnostics port to scan for faults, from engine malfunctions to tire pressure alerts. According to Virgilio’s technical documentation, it also provides step-by-step troubleshooting guides and, in some cases, remotely unlocks or restarts vehicles if the issue is software-related. “This isn’t just another app—it’s a proactive tool that can prevent breakdowns before they happen,” said Marco Rossi, Virgilio’s head of automotive innovation, in an interview with Corriere della Sera.
Why does this matter? The device taps into Europe’s growing demand for connected car solutions, with the European Commission estimating that by 2025, over 60% of new vehicles sold in the EU will feature some form of embedded diagnostics. Unlike traditional telematics systems, which often require manual input or third-party subscriptions, Virgilio’s tool operates independently, drawing data directly from the car’s ECU (electronic control unit). “The key advantage is that it doesn’t rely on cloud connectivity,” explained Dr. Elena Bianchi, a vehicle systems expert at the Politecnico di Milano, who reviewed the technology’s specifications. “This makes it far more reliable in remote areas where signal drops are common.”
How does it compare to existing solutions? While competitors like OnStar (General Motors) and Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX offer similar diagnostics, they typically require a subscription and are limited to specific vehicle models. Virgilio’s system, however, is designed as a standalone plug-and-play device, compatible with most gasoline and diesel vehicles built after 2010. What happens next? Virgilio plans to roll out the device in Italy and Germany by mid-2024, with pricing expected to range between €150–€200, including a one-year warranty. The company has also partnered with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles to pre-install the system in select models, marking the first OEM collaboration for Virgilio’s automotive division. Meanwhile, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) has signaled interest in exploring similar integrated diagnostics as part of its 2030 road safety initiative, though no formal agreements have been announced.
For now, the device remains in its pilot phase, with Virgilio emphasizing that it is not a replacement for professional mechanics. “Our goal is to empower drivers, not eliminate garages,” Rossi said. The system’s rollout coincides with a broader shift in the automotive industry toward predictive maintenance, with analysts at McKinsey & Company projecting a 40% increase in connected-car diagnostics adoption by 2027.
