Thiago Tirante Advances at Indian Wells, Defeats Federer-Linked Teen Izyan Ahmad

March 3, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Thiago Tirante of Argentina defeated 15-year-old Izyan Ahmad in the first round of qualifying at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells on Tuesday, winning 6-1, 6-2. The victory places Tirante, ranked 74th in the ATP, one match away from entering the main draw of the Masters 1000 tournament.

The match at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden saw Tirante, demonstrating a strong command of the baseline, overcome Ahmad, who is still developing his game at the professional level. Although Ahmad competed with determination, the experience of the Argentine player proved decisive.

Ahmad’s participation in the qualifying draw garnered significant attention, stemming from a widely circulated story dating back to 2017. As a seven-year-old, Ahmad asked Roger Federer during a press conference if he could continue playing professionally long enough for them to compete against each other. Federer responded positively, creating a moment that resonated with tennis fans globally.

That encounter led to a symbolic promise between the young fan and the tennis legend. Ahmad continued to pursue tennis, achieving a peak ranking near the top 130 in the ITF junior rankings and winning notable junior tournaments. The Indian Wells tournament organization recognized his progress by awarding him a wild card into the qualifying draw, marking his first competitive appearance in a Masters 1000 event.

Despite the loss to Tirante, Ahmad’s story has attracted international media coverage, highlighting his potential and inspiring interest in the sport.

For Tirante, the win represents a step forward in his career. He is scheduled to face Francesco Maestrelli, ranked 114th, for a chance to qualify for the main draw. Tirante recently climbed two places in the ATP rankings to 74th, after beginning the season outside the top 100, and has shown strong form on the South American tour following his debut in the Davis Cup representing Argentina against South Korea.
