Game Developers Brace for Impact Following GTA VI Delay, Possibly Rescheduling Releases too 2027
the latest postponement of Rockstar Games’ highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI has triggered a wave of concern-and likely emergency meetings-across the video game industry, with developers now scrambling to reassess their release schedules. Experts predict a domino effect, potentially pushing competing titles out of 2024 and even into 2027 to avoid direct competition with the gaming behemoth.
The sheer scale of the GTA franchise makes launching a rival game in the same timeframe a near-impossible undertaking. “If you release a game in the same month, you’re covered in snow.It doesn’t even matter whether the game is good or bad,” explains game journalist Ron Vorstermans. The initial delay of GTA VI already caused disruption, and this second postponement has intensified anxieties, leading some developers to consider notable adjustments to their plans.
Game world expert Thomas Verschoor notes the palpable panic within the industry.”They are in complete panic and are looking to see if they can postpone their game,” he said, adding that the first delay also left developers “at a loss.” The impact extends beyond immediate release windows; developers are reportedly weighing whether to accelerate or delay projects already in growth.
According to Verschoor, the situation is prompting urgent internal discussions, with the potential for a widespread shift in release dates. “Unbeknownst to us, games will not be released until 2027 due to the postponement,” he stated. GTA VI is currently slated for release on November 19, 2025, but even that date is not guaranteed, according to Vorstermans. “So much depends.I wouldn’t be surprised if it is 2027.”
The game is set in a fictionalized version of Miami and the surrounding area, named Leonida. Fans are now debating whether to proactively request time off work to fully immerse themselves in the new title, whenever it arrives.
