Mexican Official Gunned Down on Basketball Court

City Council secretary slain in brazen daylight attack in Guanajuato.

A public official in the Mexican state of Guanajuato was fatally shot Saturday while playing basketball, authorities report. The incident underscores the ongoing violence plaguing the region, already struggling with the highest homicide rate in the country.

Key Development

Ignacio Alejandro Roaro Aguilar, secretary of the City Council of Apaseo El Alto, was murdered in a hail of gunfire while at the Ecological Park. Initial reports indicate armed individuals on a motorcycle approached the basketball courts and opened fire.

Paramedics arriving at the scene confirmed Roaro Aguilar’s death. Another individual sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby private clinic for treatment. Their identity remains unknown.

Following the shooting, law enforcement cordoned off the area, initiating a search for the perpetrators. As of now, no arrests have been made. This incident follows a prior attack on June 16, where a municipal security element was killed on the Querétaro-Celaya federal road.

Official Condemnation

The Apaseo El Alto Municipal Government released a statement condemning the arterter, vile and cowardly attack on Ignacio Alejandro Roaro Aguilar. The City Council conveyed its condolences to the victim’s family and friends, declaring, pain has no name.

Officials said they are coordinating with state and federal authorities to conduct a thorough investigation. In the name of H. City Council, we reaffirm our determination to continue working firmly, despite adversity. We will not allow the violence to be the vocation of public service or our collective hope, the statement concluded.

Guanajuato’s Rising Homicide Rate

Guanajuato continues to be plagued by violence. In May 2024, the state recorded 323 homicides, according to Mexico’s national statistics agency INEGI, highlighting a persistent crisis of violence in the region.
