Traveler Stunned by Makeshift Bed on Thailand Ferry

Open-air mattress offered little protection for overnight cruise.

A traveler, identified as Gabbi, was shocked to discover her sleeping arrangements on an overnight ferry in Thailand consisted of a thin mattress laid out on the open deck, mere inches from the edge. The unexpected accommodations left her both surprised and amused.

Unconventional Sleeping Quarters

According to Gabbi, the “bed” was simply a thin mattress positioned at the edge of the vessel, offering no barrier between the sleeper and the open bay. “There was no wall there, no real barrier. Just a thin mattress at the open railing that led right into the bay,” she told Daily Mail.

The limited space for passengers to sleep was another challenge. Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, Gabbi maintained a positive attitude. She said, “The eight -hour cruise wasn’t the smallest, but honestly? It was one of those moments when you couldn’t help yourself, and just in the middle of chaos you find it funny.

Riding It Out

Despite the initial shock, Gabbi managed to get some rest during the eight-hour journey. She estimated that she slept about 80 percent of the time and completed the journey without major issues.
According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the country welcomed 28 million visitors in 2023, marking a significant recovery in the tourism sector Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Public Reaction

Online commenters expressed disbelief at the makeshift sleeping arrangements. One person wrote they would have “countless panic attacks,” while another shared their own experience of having “only a mattress on the ground at the outdoor toilet” on the same route for over 15 years.

Many questioned how people using the outdoor sleeping arrangement managed to use the restroom. Gabbi admitted, “I didn’t even try it.”

Island Destination

The ferry route serves Ko Tao, located near the well-known island of Ko Samui. Both islands are part of the province of Surrat Thani.
