The Sacrum: The Holy Bone and Root Chakra in Yoga

September 29, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

The os sacrum, known anatomically as the triangular bone forming the back of the pelvis and the base of the spine, carries both ancient etymological significance and fundamental biomechanical weight in human anatomy.

  • The sacrum acts as a central pedestal for the spine, distributing loads across the pelvic girdle.
  • In traditional hatha yoga anatomy, this region corresponds to the muladhara or root chakra.
  • Awareness of sacral alignment assists practitioners in addressing mechanical lower back strain.

Anatomical Structure and Location of the Sacrum

Positioned at the base of the spine, the sacrum is broad across its upper portion—termed the base—and tapers downward to a point known as the apex. Attached directly to this apex is the vestigial tailbone, or coccyx. Anatomists derive the term coccyx from the Greek word for cuckoo, due to the hooked beak-like appearance of the small bone. Standing in Mountain Pose (Tadasana) with feet parallel allows an individual to palpate the region between the firm gluteus maximus muscles to locate the hard, flat surface of the sacrum.

Biomechanical Function and Spinal Support

The spine relies on the sacrum to serve as its foundation and primary support structure. When vertebrae distribute weight evenly throughout physical movements, the body maintains what the Bhagavad Gita defines as samatva, or equanimity. Conversely, when specific vertebrae become fixed or immobile, adjacent regions absorb excessive loads, increasing the likelihood of back injury and structural misalignment.

Esoteric Symbolism and Traditional Practice

Beyond its physical properties, the sacrum holds a distinct place in traditional hatha yoga philosophy. Practitioners historically mapped the subtle energy systems of the body, associating the tip of the sacrum with the muladhara, or root-support wheel. Represented as a four-petalled lotus containing a downward-pointing triangle, this center houses the dormant spiritual energy of Kundalini. Exploring these anatomical regions bridges physical posture work with the broader historical framework of mind-body integration.
