The Rise of the New American Socialist Left, lemonde.fr reported
A new generation of leftist and democratic socialist candidates, energized by prominent figures like Bernie Sanders and Zohran Mamdani, is gaining momentum across the United States ahead of the midterms on November 3, lemonde.fr reported.
In Koreatown, a dense urban neighborhood in Los Angeles, volunteers canvassed an apartment building on Saturday, October 3, to rally support for Democratic candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
The Ground Campaign in Los Angeles
Tal Levy, a 34-year-old computer scientist, and Kyle Scoble, a 36-year-old documentary producer, spent their Saturday afternoon knocking on doors with a stack of campaign tracts. They were working to secure votes for two Democratic candidates supported by the DSA—one running for the House of Representatives in Washington and the other for the mayoral race in Los Angeles.
Many apartment doors remained closed during the afternoon canvassing effort. When a local resident named Daniel opened his door at apartment 308, he expressed skepticism about voting.
“I’m not the type to go vote,” the thirty-something restaurant server said while wearing a tank top, noting that he would only choose a candidate free from corporate backing.
“Our candidates don’t accept any donations from corporations, unlike their opponents,” Levy replied immediately. Daniel accepted the campaign flyers and provided his email address before the volunteers moved on to the next door.
DSA Volunteers Mobilize in Los Angeles Neighborhoods
American political campaigns rely heavily on ground operations. Volunteers utilize smartphones and specialized applications mapped with street numbers to track voter data and build comprehensive databases.
On that Saturday in October, 300 supporters mobilized across multiple Los Angeles neighborhoods in response to a call from the DSA. In Koreatown, the average age of the volunteers remained under 30, with roughly half participating in a political canvassing event for the first time.
Growth of the Democratic Socialists of America
The DSA has experienced a significant surge in interest over the past two years. Operating as an informal political movement rather than a traditional party, the organization currently boasts 120,000 members, marking an increase from the few thousand members it claimed a decade ago.
Candidates from this progressive and democratic socialist wing, largely in their thirties and forties, are now targeting decisive electoral victories in the upcoming November 3 midterms.
