Chewing Gum Could Offer Early Detection of Flu,Perhaps Safeguarding Major Events Like Oktoberfest
WÜRZBURG,Germany – Researchers at the University of Würzburg are developing a revolutionary diagnostic system integrated into chewing gum or lollipops, aiming for early detection of influenza and potentially mitigating outbreaks at large gatherings like Munich’s annual oktoberfest. The project, supported by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space travel as part of the “Influ Kau” influencing project, is currently focused on scaling the technology for mass production in collaboration with start-up Flareon Biotech GmbH.
The development addresses the meaningful public health concern of seasonal influenza, particularly its rapid spread at crowded events. Oktoberfest, drawing millions of visitors each year, is a known hotspot for the “Wiesn flu.” Currently, prevention relies on established methods, but the university envisions a future where a simple chew could contribute to early detection and control, making major events safer and enabling a more proactive global fight against influenza. The research team anticipates the diagnostic chewing gum will be ready for market within approximately four years.
Project manager Lorenz Meinel from the University of Würzburg explains, “This strategy opens up new opportunities for the worldwide early detection and fight against influenza.” The university highlighted the potential for this technology to substantially improve preventative measures, citing sources including Süddeutsche zeitung,Bavarian Radio, and the University of Würzburg itself.
