The Pitt: HBO Max Launch, Season 3 & Noah Wyle on Realistic Medical Drama

March 25, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Noah Wyle, star and executive producer of the Emmy-winning HBO Max medical drama The Pitt, voiced his support for a national healthcare service in the United States during a discussion in London Tuesday evening, coinciding with the streaming platform’s launch in the U.K. And Ireland.

Wyle, who previously starred in the long-running NBC series ER, spoke alongside HBO and HBO Max chief Casey Bloys following a screening of the first episode of The Pitt. The series, created by R. Scott Gemmill, follows the staff of Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center as they navigate the challenges of an understaffed and underfunded emergency room. The show has garnered praise for its realistic portrayal of the healthcare system and its ability to mirror real-world events, including a recent storyline focused on ICE procedures.

While acknowledging the differences between the U.S. And U.K. Healthcare systems, Wyle expressed envy for the National Health Service (NHS), the publicly funded system in the U.K. That provides comprehensive free care. “Our system at the moment is laden with the insurance companies being the intermediary … and care being predicated by the algorithm that the insurance company dictates,” he said. “So it’s really turn into a profit-driven, quality-of-care-diminishing system.” He then directly stated, “I personally think we need some sort of national healthcare service in the United States. We need universal coverage for everybody.”

The Pitt’s structure, Wyle explained, is designed to immerse viewers in the fast-paced environment of an emergency room. “Everything is geared towards it being a voyeuristic experience for the viewer, kind of analogous to being in the back seat of a patrol car going on a ride-along, or being embedded with a combat unit in battle,” he said. He described the production style as “very kinetic, very active, and it’s the closest to doing live theater that you can operate with a camera,” utilizing 360-degree shooting techniques.

Bloys questioned Wyle about the creative process for the show’s third season, which is currently in development. Wyle noted the unique challenges of crafting character arcs within the show’s format, where each episode represents a single hour in the life of the hospital. “Here’s 15 hours of one day,” he explained. “So you’re painting with a much finer brush. For a character’s arc, it’s not really enough to go through the courtship of a romance, but it’s enough to get your head turned. These are really small arcs that happen in the course of a day, but can be really satisfying if you’re engaged with that character.”

The series, produced by John Wells Productions and Warner Bros. Television, has already achieved significant recognition, winning five Emmys last year, including awards for best drama series, best actor for Wyle, and best supporting actress for Katherine LaNasa. Season one brought nearly 600 production jobs to California and generated $125 million for the state economy, according to Wyle, who testified before a California Senate hearing about the importance of state tax breaks for film and television production.

Wyle also recounted a recent incident at the Critics Choice Awards where he provided medical assistance to KPop Demon Hunters producer Michelle Wong after she fell and hit her head. “She had a little cut on her elbow. Somebody handed me a Band-Aid, and I felt very medical,” he quipped.

In the U.K., The Pitt began streaming on HBO Max on Thursday, March 26, with all episodes of season one and a significant portion of season two available at launch. The streamer is also accessible through launch partners Sky and Prime Video.
