Latvian Radio Choir Concludes anniversary Year with Haunting Past Performance

The internationally acclaimed Latvian radio Choir is marking the culmination of its 85th anniversary celebrations with a unique audiovisual concert story, “Vecais Tīss. Vilkatis” (“Old Tees. Werewolf”). A single performance is scheduled for Saturday, November 29th, at Riga’s “Daile” Music House, showcasing the choir’s enduring artistry adn commitment too innovative musical exploration.

The performance draws inspiration from a remarkable 18th-century court record in Cēsis County, detailing the testimony of an 80-year-old man named Tees who confessed to living as a werewolf for much of his life. Remarkably, this was common knowledge within his community, where Tees was also respected as a healer and animal charmer. The concert aims to transport audiences to a worldview where humanity existed in closer harmony with nature, and where understanding of natural forces was paramount. It prompts reflection on our modern relationship with the surroundings and essential spiritual values.

This enterprising production is a collaborative effort, led by director Inga Ungur (Tropa). New Riga Theater actress Guna Zariņa serves as both scenographer and narrator, lending her voice to the unfolding story. The performance features a dynamic musical landscape created by conductor Kaspars Putniņš – also the performance’s originator and artistic director – alongside jazz guitarist Matīss Čudars and percussionist Ivars Arutjunjans. live video projections by emerging designer Fricis Kalvelis will visually enhance the narrative.

The musical score blends conventional Latvian folk songs with original compositions by Mārtiņš Viļums and Matīss Čudars. Viļums’ work is characterized by its intricate textures, microtonality, and overtone singing, evoking a sense of ancient ritual. Čudars’ contributions fuse jazz improvisation with classical structure and ambient soundscapes, creating a powerfully evocative atmosphere.
