The Kingdom: French Thriller Dominates Netflix Charts with 100% Rating

February 17, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The French crime drama Le Royaume (The Kingdom) has surged to the top of Netflix’s viewing charts, two years after its initial theatrical release, and is currently garnering a perfect 100% positive critic rating with an average score of 4.5 out of 5, according to reports surfacing this week.

Released in France on November 13, 2024, the film, directed by Julien Colonna, centers on Lesia, a 15-year-old girl who is unexpectedly brought into the orbit of her estranged, criminal father, Pierre-Paul, as his hideout comes under threat. The narrative unfolds as a tense chase across the island of Corsica, forcing the pair to confront their fractured relationship amidst escalating violence.

Colonna reportedly drew inspiration for the film from his own experiences with fatherhood, aiming to explore themes of family, loyalty, and the complexities of a life steeped in crime. The film was largely cast with first-time actors from Corsica, adding to its authenticity. Production faced a challenge during the filming of a key boat scene, which had to be reworked due to a storm over the Gulf of Ajaccio, according to reports.

Le Royaume premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where it was acquired by Metrograph Pictures for North American distribution. The film’s success on Netflix, beginning February 13, 2026, marks a significant expansion of its audience. Critics have praised Colonna’s precise direction, the film’s atmospheric tension, and its nuanced portrayal of the father-daughter dynamic.

The cast includes Ghjuvanna Benedetti as Lesia and Saveriu Santucci as Pierre-Paul. Additional cast members are Anthony Morganti, Andrea Cossu, Frédéric Poggi, and Régis Gomez. The film’s screenplay is credited to Julien Colonna and Jeanne Herry.

The film’s arrival on Netflix has sparked renewed discussion about its compelling blend of thriller elements and emotional depth, with viewers noting its avoidance of sensationalism in favor of a more measured and atmospheric approach.
