The Harder They Come: A Review of the Electrifying Musical

by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor

London, UK – A new stage adaptation of the iconic 1972 film The Harder they come is electrifying audiences at the Theater Royal Stratford East, praised for it’s vibrant energy and innovative use of reggae music. The production, running until October 25th, transforms the film’s gritty narrative into a compelling theatrical experience, seamlessly blending music, dance, and character advancement.

The stage version distinguishes itself by amplifying the film’s musical backdrop, utilizing songs not just as accompaniment but as integral components of the storytelling. A standout sequence features the preacher’s congregation shedding their robes for a dynamic dancehall performance, visually representing their hidden desires, underscored by a “throbbing bass.” Lyrics are interwoven to deepen characterization and advance the plot-such as, “Hitting With Music” reflects Hilton’s ambition, while “Pressure Drop” foreshadows Ivan’s tragic fate.

Natey Jones reprises his role as Ivan, having previously performed it in a 2023 New York production. Madeline Charlemagne delivers a powerful performance as Elsa, and Jason Pennycooke, Thomas Vernal, and Danny Bailey bring nuance to their roles as the Preacher, Hilton, and José, respectively. The production is lauded as a worthy successor to the original film, capturing its spirit and impact.
