The Flaming Lips Announce New Album The Teardrop Throbs and 2027 Tour Dates
The Flaming Lips will release their 17th album, The Teardrop Throbs, on January 22, 2027, through Third Man Records, marking their first collection of new material in six years. Rolling Stone reported that the band launched the lead single, “God Will Control the Werewolves,” alongside the album announcement, and scheduled an intimate concert series across the United States and the United Kingdom for early 2027.
Wayne Coyne Explains Album Inspiration and Tracklist
Wayne Coyne stated that “God Will Control the Werewolves” grew out of a hide-and-seek game his young sons, Bloom and Rex, played during a full moon. When Bloom asked if werewolves would get them while they hid, Coyne told him God would control the werewolves for a little bit. Coyne envisioned the track sounding in his head like Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon with Syd Barrett still in the band. Wayne Coyne noted that the album opening track, “Throb,” incorporates a snippet from the soundtrack to the film The Night of the Hunter.
The 13-track The Teardrop Throbs track list comprises:
- Throb
- God Will Control The Werewolves
- Titan
- Every Teardrop Cried
- Hooray
- Instructions On How To Draw An Eyeball or How To Deal With A Loved One Who Is Addicted To Drugs
- You See You In Me
- You’ve Got Brain Damage
- At the End of the Day
- The Trees Are Getting Their Leaves / Ceasefire In The City of Singing Flame
- Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell Part Two
- A Sunset Far Away
- Now I Understand
Departure of Multi-Instrumentalist Steven Drozd
The Teardrop Throbs stands as the first Flaming Lips record without multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd since he joined the group in 1991. At the end of 2025, Drozd stated he was officially done with the band following a personal crisis that led him to step back from touring. Drozd stated he wanted to continue as a non-touring member, but alleged that Coyne disagreed on his new role, turning a step-back into a permanent exit.
Coyne disputed Drozd’s characterization of the split on Instagram, writing that the reason for the departure was sad and infuriating, and asserting that Drozd’s public account was a lie.
Band Books Two-Night Stands for 2027 Tour
To support the release, the band booked two-night stands in five cities for early 2027. Each city will feature one set highlighting the new record alongside early-career tracks, while the alternate set will feature The Teardrop Throbs reimaginings paired with songs from the aughts onward.
