The Courtyard of Longing: New Portuguese Miniseries on RTP

The Portuguese television channel RTP1 premiered the first episode of the miniseries O Pátio da Saudade on Tuesday evening, February 17th, at 11:00 PM local time. The adaptation of Leonel Vieira’s 2025 film of the same name, which became Portugal’s most-watched movie that year, is too available on the RTP Play streaming platform.

The series centers on Vanessa, portrayed by Sara Matos, who unexpectedly inherits a dilapidated theater from a distant aunt. Despite her agent, Tozé Leal, urging her to sell the property, Vanessa feels a connection to the theater’s history as a venue for Revista à Portuguesa, a traditional Portuguese revue. She enlists the help of friends Joana and Ribeiro to stage a performance intended to restore the theater to its former glory.

However, Vanessa’s ambitions face opposition from Armando, the owner of a neighboring theater, who is determined to thwart her efforts. The narrative, described as a comedy, explores themes of humor, tradition, and the cultural significance of Portuguese theater, according to RTP1.

The cast includes Ana Guiomar, Manuel Marques, José Pedro Vasconcelos, José Raposo, Gilmário Vemba, Alexandra Lencastre, and Aldo Lima alongside Matos. The miniseries consists of three episodes.

The original film was briefly available on Prime Video in November 2025, following its theatrical release in August of the same year. The adaptation to a miniseries format offers a new avenue for audiences to experience the story.
