The AMD Ryzen 9 9950X and Ryzen 9 9900X Review: Flagship Zen 5 Soars

AMD Ryzen 9000 series CPUs Launch with More Affordable Pricing and Enhanced Chipset Options

Breaking News: AMD has officially launched its highly anticipated Ryzen 9000 series desktop processors, built on the AM5 socket. The new lineup introduces more competitive pricing compared to its Ryzen 7000 predecessors, with the flagship Ryzen 9 9950X debuting at $649, a $50 reduction from the Ryzen 9 7950X’s launch price. The Ryzen 9 9900X also sees a $50 price cut, launching at $499. This pricing strategy continues a trend of decreasing costs with each new generation, dating back to the Zen 3 Ryzen 5000 series in 2020.

Evergreen Context: The ryzen 9000 series processors leverage the existing AM5 socket, ensuring compatibility with current X670E and X670 motherboards. While new X870E and X870 chipset motherboards are slated for release in September 2024, featuring advancements like Wi-Fi 7 and ubiquitous USB 4.0 support, existing AM5-compatible boards will readily support the new CPUs. These upcoming chipsets, like their predecessors, utilize the ASMedia Promontory 21 silicon, with the primary distinctions lying in their enhanced feature sets. Notably, all X870(E) boards will mandate at least one PCIe 5.0 NVMe slot, a feature that was optional on some X670(E) models. Both the new and current AM5 platforms offer a total of 44 PCIe lanes, comprising 24 from the CPU and 20 from the chipset.

The introduction of the Ryzen 9000 series marks AMD’s latest offering in the high-performance desktop CPU market, aiming to challenge the competition with improved performance and value. The lineup includes processors such as the Ryzen 9 9950X and Ryzen 9 9900X, with further details on other SKUs and their performance benchmarks expected as reviews become available.
