Thailand Eyes Constitutional Amendments, Frist Referendum Round Planned for Election Day
BANGKOK – Amendments to thailand’s constitution are moving forward following a recent Constitutional Court decision, with a first-round referendum perhaps coinciding with the next election.Mr. Natthaphong, a key figure in the process, indicated a positive trajectory, though further refinement of details is required.
The three main parties – Phuea Thai and Phuea Thai – have agreed to pursue a referendum in two rounds, the first and second to be held on election day, aligning with the Constitutional Court’s resolution. This allows for amendments to Category 15 of the constitution within the next four months, opening the door for a new constitution to be drafted during the current goverment.
The court’s decision stipulates that the drafting of the new constitution cannot originate from a direct popular election. Instead, each party must determine the constitutional drafting process, potentially through indirect election or appointment by the Council.
A critical deadline looms: the Council must consider Agenda 1, concerning the amendment of Category 15, by September to meet the four-month timeframe. Parties are now working to finalize thier proposed amendments to category 15 for submission to the Council within the next week.
