Anutin‘s Minority Government Faces Four-Month Test, Poll Suggests

BANGKOK – thailand’s newly formed minority government, led by Prime Minister Anutin charnvirakul and backed by the People’s Party, is expected to last up to four months, according to recent public opinion data. The government was established with the People’s Party providing support without formally joining the ruling coalition, a condition tied to demands for constitutional reform.

The People’s Party has stipulated that Anutin dissolve the House of Representatives within four months, following amendments to the charter enabling a complete rewrite. A survey of public sentiment reveals a divided outlook on the government’s prospects.

While 35.88% of respondents believe the government will struggle due to constant negotiation with the People’s Party, a significant 30.31% view a minority government as the best option for the current political landscape. A further 23.21% agree with the formation of a minority government, while 23.05% anticipate stability with the People’s party’s support. However, 21.45% foresee an eventual clash between the two parties.

Support for Anutin as prime minister is also mixed. 30.38% of those surveyed “somewhat support” his leadership, while 23.36% offer “no support at all.” Strong support registers at 23.13%, with 22.67% expressing “somewhat” disapproval.

A majority of respondents (32.98%) “strongly agree” with the People’s Party’s decision to remain outside the coalition, and 23.35% “somewhat agree” with the move. Conversely, 22.52% “strongly disagree” and 19.39% “somewhat disagree” with the party’s stance.

Other viewpoints include 10.61% believing Bhumjaithai will break promises to the People’s Party, 10.53% predicting the government will eventually become a majority coalition, 8.17% suggesting Anutin should wait untill the next election to seek the premiership, and 5.34% advocating for the People’s Party to join the coalition. A small percentage, 4.12%, anticipate a future alliance between the People’s Party and Pheu Thai to challenge the current government. Less than 1% offered no comment across all polls.
