Tesla Brings the Grid to Your drive with New Tron: Ares Update
Tesla owners can now experience a slice of the digital world with the rollout of a new software update inspired by the recent disney film, Tron: Ares. The update, announced by Tesla as “The grid has expanded to your Tesla: the Tron: Ares update is now rolling out,” focuses entirely on aesthetic changes, transforming the vehicle’s interior and navigation display.
While Tron: Ares, starring Jared Leto, has received mixed reviews – with some criticism directed at its character development and plot – the film’s striking visual style has been widely praised. A key element of this aesthetic is the distinctive look of the vehicles within the “grid,” featuring glowing red stripes and LED accents.
The tesla update allows drivers to replicate this look within their cars. Through the infotainment screen, owners can adjust the interior lighting to display pulsing red stripes, mirroring the iconic vehicles from the Tron universe. The navigation system also receives a makeover, displaying the Tesla as a Tron-style engine and projecting a red line onto the virtual road surface.
However, the update hasn’t been universally welcomed. Some Tesla drivers have expressed concern that the automaker should prioritize functional updates over cosmetic features, viewing the Tron theme as a “distraction.” Others see the update as an implicit advertisement for Disney, a perception complicated by Tesla’s previous decision to remove the Disney+ streaming service from its infotainment menu, reportedly due to a disagreement with the company.
Despite the criticism, the update offers a unique visual experience for fans of the Tron franchise, including those familiar with the original 1982 film starring Jeff Bridges. The update is a software-only change, requiring no hardware modifications.
