Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory Celebrates 5 Millionth Battery Pack Production milestone
TeslaS Shanghai Gigafactory reached a significant production milestone on November 12th,announcing the completion of its 5 millionth battery pack. These battery packs are integral to the company’s popular models, including the Model 3 and Model Y.
Located in Shanghai’s Lingang New Area, the 860,000 square meter facility represents Tesla’s first overseas vehicle manufacturing plant and China’s first wholly foreign-owned auto production facility.Production commenced at the end of 2019.
The Gigafactory’s output extends beyond battery packs. In August 2024, the plant celebrated the production of Tesla’s 10 millionth electric drive unit and reached a total vehicle production of 3 million units. That same year, over 1 million vehicles were exported, and 916,000 deliveries were made – representing approximately half of Tesla’s global production volume.
Tesla emphasizes its commitment to battery technology, stating it independently develops cell chemistry and battery pack structure. This approach allows for high energy density, robust performance, and reliable operation even in challenging conditions, particularly maintaining stable discharge in low temperatures.
The company also highlights the longevity of its battery systems, designed to outlast the vehicle itself with a cycle life exceeding typical vehicle service life, addressing concerns about battery degradation.Furthermore, Tesla asserts its safety standards exceed industry benchmarks, achieved through rigorous testing throughout the entire process – from material selection and module packaging to structural protection – and incorporating multiple layers of redundancy in its design.
