The Tesla Model Y has been awarded the 2026 Drive Car of the Year, marking a first for the automaker in the competition’s 21-year history. The announcement, made Monday, recognizes the electric SUV’s blend of practicality, value, and technological innovation, according to Drive content director James Ward.
The Model Y’s victory is also notable as the first time a vehicle manufactured in China has claimed the overall Drive Car of the Year title. It is the second fully electric vehicle to receive the award, signaling a growing acceptance of electric vehicles in the Australian market. The Model Y previously won the “Best Electric Vehicle Under $60,000” category, before being selected as the overall winner from a field of category champions including the BMW 5-Series, BYD Atto 2 and Dolphin Essential, Hyundai Palisade, Kia Tasman, Volvo XC90, and Zeekr 7X.
Priced from $58,900 before on-road costs, the 2026 Tesla Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive features a 60kWh battery offering a range of up to 466 kilometers. Judges highlighted the vehicle’s “future-looking technology” as a key differentiator, specifically mentioning the optional full-self-driving (supervised) driver assistance package available for $149 per month. This package represents the most advanced driver assistance capability currently available, offering a glimpse into the potential future of autonomous driving.
The 2026 Model Y incorporates a styling refresh, including new front and rear fascias and updated illumination elements. Interior improvements include more comfortable front seats, a redesigned dashboard, and new ambient lighting options. A new entry-level Standard trim has also been added to the lineup, expanding the Model Y’s accessibility. According to a review by Car and Driver, the updates aim to align the Model Y with competitors such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Volkswagen ID.4.
Tesla’s extensive charging network in Australia, now accessible to owners of non-Tesla vehicles, was also cited as a significant advantage. The network is currently the largest and most reliable electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the country. The Model Y offers ample cargo space, with 971 liters in the boot and an additional 117 liters in the front trunk. Ride quality has been improved with the Juniper update, and the vehicle now features a backlit LED tail light.
Tesla recently extended the warranty period on all its vehicles to five years, and continues to offer an eight-year, 160,000-kilometer warranty on the battery and drive unit. The Model Y was Australia’s best-selling electric vehicle in 2025, and the 2026 model’s enhancements are expected to further solidify its position in the market.
