A Tennessee police officer is in critical condition following a crash friday night involving vehicles supporting the motorcade of Vice President JD Vance, authorities said. The incident occurred in Maryville, approximately 17 miles south of Knoxville.
The crash involved a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper and a Maryville Police Department motorcycle officer. Both officers were transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for evaluation and treatment, according to the city of Maryville. While details regarding the trooper’s condition haven’t been released, the city confirmed the police officer is in critical condition. One of the ambulances accompanying the motorcade immediately provided medical assistance at the scene, stated Special agent Jason pack, director of communications for the Tennessee Department of Safety.
“We ask everyone to keep the officer, family and the medical staff in yoru prayers,” said Maryville Police Department chief Tony Crisp.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. The U.S. Secret Service, which was monitoring the situation, confirmed that the safety of the protectee was not compromised. Katherine Pierce,the agency’s resident agent in charge in knoxville,released a statement affirming,”The safety and movement of our protectees were not impacted by this incident.”
The names of the officers involved have not been released.
