Tennessee Falls 2-0 to No. 11 South Carolina, utsports.com reported
The University of Tennessee soccer team suffered a 2-0 defeat against No. 11 South Carolina on Friday night in Columbia, outshooting their opponents 11-5 while conceding two goals on the only two shots on target the Gamecocks managed all match, utsports.com reported.
Possession Fails to Translate Against Opportunistic Gamecocks
Tennessee held the ball for long stretches of the contest but could not find a way past a formidable South Carolina defense. The Lady Vols dropped to 6-3-3 overall and 1-3-2 in conference play with the result. South Carolina entered the match carrying a 0.50 goals-against average, holding the second-best defensive mark in the conference. That defensive shape held firm through 90 minutes.
The match turned on two precise finishing moments by the hosts. Neither side generated serious danger during the opening 20 minutes. Then the Gamecocks broke through from a set piece in the 25th minute, heading home a corner kick that struck the underside of the crossbar.

This marked the third consecutive match in which the Lady Vols fell behind early. It also produced a 1-0 halftime deficit, marking only the second time this season Tennessee has trailed at the break following a similar situation in their previous outing against Auburn.
Second-Half Attack Falls Short of Equalizer
Tennessee responded to the deficit with aggressive intent after the intermission, firing seven shots to South Carolina’s two over the final 45 minutes. Despite controlling the tempo in the attacking third, the Lady Vols were caught out on a counterattack.
South Carolina capitalized in the 55th minute to double the lead to 2-0. Chasing a two-goal margin against one of the conference’s stingiest backlines proved too steep a climb. Jayla Blue came closest to breaking the drought in the 78th minute, directing a header off the goalpost.
The 2-0 final scoreline left Tennessee shut out for the second consecutive match. The team now faces a quick turnaround to address offensive execution before returning to Regal Soccer Stadium.
Upcoming SEC Schedule at Regal Soccer Stadium
Tennessee will attempt to halt its three-match losing skid on Thursday, October 15, when the squad opens a two-match home stand against Arkansas. Kickoff in Knoxville is scheduled for 7 p.m. Eastern Time.
