Tecno MWC 2026: Color-Changing Phones & Modular Designs Unveiled

Barcelona, Spain – Tecno Mobile unveiled a series of innovative smartphone concepts at Mobile World Congress 2026, showcasing both radical design shifts and a deepening focus on artificial intelligence integration. The company’s presentations, running from March 2nd to 5th at Fira Gran Via, included a color-changing smartphone and a modular device utilizing magnetic attachments, signaling a potential departure from traditional smartphone design.

Among the most striking reveals was the POVA NEON, a smartphone featuring a transparent rear section filled with ionized neon gas that dynamically alters its color. Tecno did not specify whether the POVA NEON will move beyond the concept stage and become commercially available.

Tecno too demonstrated a modular smartphone system based on “Modular Magnetic Interconnection Technology.” This system allows users to attach external modules to the back of the device using magnets, expanding functionality without increasing the phone’s core size. Demonstrated modules included external battery packs offering 3000 or 6000 mAh of additional capacity, a telephoto lens attachment, an action camera unit, and a dedicated camera platform. The modular phone itself measures just 4.9 millimeters in thickness, thinner than the 5.8mm and 5.6mm profiles of the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge and iPhone Air respectively.

Beyond hardware innovations, Tecno highlighted advancements in its software ecosystem. The company unveiled an updated version of its Ella AI Assistant, alongside an AI Health Assistant that leverages the device’s camera to measure vital signs such as heart rate and blood oxygen levels. The increasing reliance on smartphones for health monitoring was cited as a key driver for this feature.

Tecno also introduced AI MindHub, a self-organizing system designed to automatically categorize files, notes, and media without requiring manual folder creation. This aims to simplify content management for users.

The modular approach addresses a growing challenge for smartphone manufacturers: delivering increased on-device AI processing power without significantly increasing device size, weight, or thermal constraints. The company’s concept lineup focused on experimental industrial design rather than finished commercial products, according to reports from the event.

MWC Barcelona 2026, which opened on March 2nd, is hosting over 1,200 speakers and thought leaders, focusing on the intersection of technology, society, and global challenges. The conference features summits on topics including AI, 5G, and the Internet of Things.

Tecno has not yet announced pricing or release dates for any of the showcased devices, stating that launch plans will be communicated on a market-by-market basis.
