Teachers Unions Explore Alternatives to Traditional Strikes
Belgian teachers are considering new methods of protest that move beyond traditional strikes, according to statements made to La DH by the general secretary and president of CSC-Enseignement. The aim is to minimize disruption to student education.
Instead of walkouts and demonstrations, teachers are contemplating actions such as suspending grading, foregoing parent-teacher meetings, and cancelling optional school trips organized by teachers on a voluntary basis. The effectiveness of this approach - foregoing corrections and trips – remains to be seen.
Police Report Increase in Distracted Driving Despite Existing Laws
Despite being prohibited for 25 years, cell phone use while driving remains a notable problem in Belgium. according to data from Vias, a road safety institute, drivers who use a phone while driving are twice as likely to be involved in an accident, and responding to a message increases that risk twelvefold.
Sudinfo reports that police officers express frustration wiht the continued prevalence of this dangerous behavior, notably given the availability of hands-free systems and smartphone integration technologies like CarPlay. The reasons behind this ongoing trend are currently unclear.
Calling increases the risk of an accident by two, responding to a message by twelve.
