Pakistani Sound Engineer Taurees Habib Secretly Won a Grammy for Dune: Part Two
Karachi, Pakistan – Taurees Habib, a sound engineer from Karachi, quietly made history in February by becoming the first Pakistani to win a Grammy Award for engineering, and only the second Pakistani ever to receive the prestigious accolade. He revealed the win this week, sharing images and videos of the award on social media after it arrived at his home.
Habib received the Grammy for Best Score soundtrack for Visual Media for his work on Hans Zimmer’s score for Dune: Part Two. The trophy is engraved with “Taurees Habib, engineer. Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media – 2024, Dune: Part Two (hans Zimmer).”
“I’m so incredibly honoured to have received this for my work on Dune: Part two, and to be the first Pakistani to receive this for engineering and only the second Pakistani ever to win a Grammy,” Habib wrote in a Facebook post. He also shared a video on instagram documenting the unboxing of the award, stating, “It felt like one of those things that’d be better to show than tell about.”
The win follows a surprising turn of events, as the Dune: Part Two score was deemed ineligible for consideration at the Academy Awards due to the inclusion of music carried over from the first Dune film. Despite this, the Grammy Recording Academy recognized the score’s excellence.
Habib joins singer Arooj Aftab as the only two Pakistanis to have ever won a grammy Award. Hans Zimmer, who previously won five Grammys for his work on The Dark Knight,Crimson Tide,The Lion King, and “Circle of Life” from The Lion king, composed the Dune: Part Two score. Habib’s achievement highlights the growing recognition of Pakistani talent on the global stage within the music and film industries.
