Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi Praises Transpacific Ties
The glitzy black-tie gala, a collaboration between THR Japan and the Motion Picture Association held during the Tokyo International Film Festival, kicked off with a special message from Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. According to hollywoodreporter.com, Takaichi extolled the cultural and political relationship between Japan and the United States, highlighting America’s 250th anniversary. “The close partnership between Japan and the United States in the film and media industry not only supports cultural exchange between our two countries. It is also a major driving force of the global entertainment economy,” Takaichi said in remarks provided to the event. The Prime Minister added, “The courage of pioneers like Ms Okamoto gives great hope to the next generation of creators.”
Tao Okamoto Reflects on Her Transition From Modeling to Cinema
Okamoto, a model-turned-actress known for roles in The Wolverine, Hannibal, and The Man in the High Castle, accepted the award from MPA APAC president and managing director Urmila Venugopalan and THR Japan Chairman Tsukasa Shiga. She wore an elegant black dress as she addressed the room of Japanese film executives, senior government ministers, and visiting Hollywood powerbrokers. “My acting career began with the Hollywood film The Wolverine, released in 2013,” Okamoto said in her acceptance speech. “Until then, I had been working as a model in New York. I had never imagined becoming an actor, so it was a big, unexpected gift.”

The honor follows a milestone year for Okamoto, who received the Cannes Film Festival award for best actress for her performance in Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s acclaimed film All of a Sudden. “In 2023, I moved my base from the United States to Japan, and began working here in earnest. That is when I met Ryusuke Hamaguchi for his film All of a Sudden. It felt as if my journey, which began in America, had finally connected with my roots in Japan,” Okamoto noted. She becomes the third Japanese honoree to receive the coveted THR Trailblazer Award, following Shōgun stars Takehiro Hira and Tadanobu Asano.
