Daegu & Tallinn harmonize: Cities Deepen Musical Collaboration
Daegu, South Korea – A delegation from Tallinn, Estonia – a fellow UNESCO Creative City of Music – concluded a productive visit to Daegu November 8th, solidifying a burgeoning partnership aimed at fostering cultural exchange and expanding opportunities for musicians in both cities. The visit underscores Daegu’s dedication to international collaboration within the UNESCO network.
Tallinn, recognized by UNESCO in 2021 for its thriving music scene encompassing jazz, classical, and contemporary styles, and its lively festival culture, first connected with Daegu at the 2022 UNESCO Creative City of Music Daegu Global Forum. This initial connection has already yielded exciting results: young Estonian artists participated in the Solasian Orchestra at Daegu Concert House in 2023,and Daegu Opera House’s acclaimed original production,Shim Cheong,is slated to be performed at the Saaremaa Opera Festival in Estonia in 2025.
The Tallinn delegation’s intensive four-day program included tours of Daegu’s key concert halls, arts organizations, and creative spaces. Meetings with festival organizers, arts groups, and cultural policy leaders focused on developing future collaborative projects, including artist residencies, joint performances, and potentially, new cross-city festivals.
“This visit is a significant step in strengthening Daegu’s global presence within the UNESCO Creative Cities Network,” stated Choi Mi-kyung, Director of the cultural Arts Policy Division of Daegu Metropolitan City. “Daegu’s interconnected musical landscape – encompassing venues, festivals, and creative hubs – provides a strong foundation for this exchange. We are committed to expanding opportunities for our local musicians on the international stage and further establishing Daegu as a leading global Creative City of Music.”
