The Taliban government has reportedly banned 18 university courses ‍in Afghanistan, citing incompatibility with Sharia law and their governing policies. The prohibition, said to be in effect‌ since August, impacts subjects including human rights, sexual harassment, gender studies, the role of women in communication, and⁤ women and sociology.

According to reports from the BBC, professors at Afghan universities are grappling with how to address the curricular gaps created ‌by the ban.

Zakia Adeli, former Viceminister of justice ⁢for Afghanistan, expressed unsurprise at the new restrictions. Speaking to the BBC,Adeli stated,”If you ⁤see what the Taliban have done in‌ the past 4 years,it would ‍not be ⁣far-fetched to expect that they⁣ would make changes in the‌ curriculum.”

Adeli further explained, as reported by the BBC, “Given the women’s hateful mentality and the policy ‍of the Taliban, it is logical that when women are not⁢ allowed to study, their views, ideas ⁢and⁢ writings are also suppressed.”
