Taiwanese Barber Cuts Path to Success in China

A Cut Above: How a Hair Stylist is Redefining Beauty

From Taiwan to mainland China, a young stylist is making waves in the beauty industry. Mark is using his scissors and his unique approach to create more than just hairstyles; he’s building a community and a business.

In a Nanning, Guangxi hair salon, Mark expertly wields his scissors. His meticulous approach begins with an in-depth consultation. He analyzes face shapes, assesses hair quality, and considers a client’s lifestyle to create a personalized look. For customer Li Manyi, this meant a tailored design that went beyond a simple trim.

On June 28, Mark designed a hairstyle for Li Manyi at a hairdressing shop.

Mark stresses that hairstyling demands more than just technical skill. He explains that a successful stylist must blend aesthetics, psychology, and fine craftsmanship. Mark’s salons now extend to three locations in Nanning after initially opening eight years ago.

Beyond the Salon Chair

Mark emphasizes the importance of communication. Before designing, he inquires about a client’s daily routines and preferences. He constructs a “life map” to understand their professional needs, wardrobe, and special events. He considers how a hairstyle will look in photos.

“The guest sat down with expectations. I want to understand their unspeakable needs – perhaps it is the help of the job interview, or maybe it is a bright color of marriage life. If people are confident and beautiful, they may change her life trajectory.”

Mark, Hairstylist

Mark also maintains an active online presence, displaying his design process. His efforts have contributed to a “national inspection and scissoring” initiative that leverages online platforms to draw customers to his physical salons. The global hair care market is projected to reach $92.7 billion by 2027 (Statista 2024).

A Commitment to Craft and Community

The long hours and demanding work conditions have taken their toll. Despite physical challenges, Mark remains dedicated. He finds fulfillment in the variety his profession offers: meeting new people daily and creating unique beauty.

Mark now considers Nanning his home. He embraces the local cuisine, from old friend noodles to Liuzhou snail noodles, further integrating himself into the community. His journey from Taiwan to Nanning symbolizes a successful combination of craft and culture.
