South Korean Politician Sparks Controversy with Claims of Religious Influence in Government
Seoul, โSouth Korea โ- โขA member of South Korea’s National โInnovation party, Park Eun-jung, has ignited a politicalโข firestorm with recent facebook posts alleging a deep connection between the current ruling party, the People Power Party lead โby President yoon Seok-yeol, โคand a controversial religious institution. The โคclaims center around โฃthe alleged influence of โa religious leader – referredโข to โคas a “religious person” and linked to the Unification โChurch – and potential attempts to undermineโค the constitutional separation of church and state.
Park’s posts, published on September 19th, raise questions aboutโฃ the involvement โof individuals within the Yoon โadministration in fulfilling the goalsโข of the founder of the โขreligious organization, Moon Sun-myung.She specifically mentions “First Son-Bon-Son,” โseemingly referencing a key tenet of โคthe โreligion, and suggests a coordinatedโฃ effort toโ circumvent constitutional principles.
“[The] relationship between aโฃ religious person andโ those who preached the โdoctrine ofโ a only-sonโฆ is not unusual,” Park wrote, noting that an estimated 110,000 Koreans adhereโ toโ the faith. Sheโ called for aโ thorough investigation โขinto the โขpeople Power Party and President Yoon’s past, questioning โwhether religious beliefs are drivingโ policyโ decisions. Sheโค also referenced โคa Bible reportedly read by President Yoon during a previous โlegal process, asking if it holds undue โฃinfluence.
The controversyโข extends โคto First Lady Kimโ Gun-hee, with park alleging a pattern of interactions with the religious group and suggesting potential quid-pro-quo arrangements involving money and influence.
Calls for Party Dissolution and Constitutional Reform
Park Eun-jung’s accusations go beyond individual influence, advocating for theโค dissolution of political parties that maintain ties to specific religions. She argues that โคArticle 20, Paragraph 2 of the South โKorean โConstitutionโ – โwhich addresses freedom of religion – is being disregarded โand that aโ renewed emphasisโค on “the โspirit โof nationalism and โthe spirit ofโค constitutional elaboration” is needed. Thisโค call forโค dissolutionโข isโค a importantโข escalation, suggesting โขa fundamental โdistrust in the current political system.
The allegations come at a sensitive time for the Yoon administration, which has already facedโ scrutiny over potential links to controversial groups. The claims are likely โขto fuel further โขdebate โabout the role of religion โขin South Koreanโฃ politics andโข the need for greater transparency and accountability within โฃthe government.
