Italy’s 2026 Winter Olympics: Unexpected Love Song Becomes Anthem

by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor February 17, 2026
written by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor

A buoyant, unexpected anthem is echoing through venues preparing to host the 2026 Winter Olympics: “Che confusione,” a 1980s Italian pop song. As soon as the opening lines are sung, crowds spontaneously join in, a phenomenon observed in hockey stadiums, Milan’s central squares, and even the biathlon arena in Antholz, South Tyrol.

The choice of an unofficial theme song, a lighthearted love ballad rather than a commissioned piece or a re-purposed classic, has been met with widespread approval. It stands in stark contrast to past Olympic musical selections, notably Mariah Carey’s widely criticized rendition of “Volare” at the 2006 Turin Games.

Antholz, a small mountain village in South Tyrol, is preparing to host the biathlon competitions from February 8th to 21st, 2026. Eleven races are scheduled to grab place in the Olympic Arena Südtirol Alto Adige. The arena has been modernized in anticipation of the Games, which will see the world’s biathlon elite compete on Italian soil.

The Olympic Winter Games 2026 will be held in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, marking the first time Italy has hosted the Winter Olympics since Turin in 2006. The selection of Milan and Cortina was made in 2019, beating out other contenders. The games will run from February 6th to February 22nd, 2026.

Beyond biathlon, the Olympic Arena in South Tyrol will also host bob events on February 17th and 22nd. The broader schedule includes ice hockey matches beginning February 5th, figure skating from February 7th, speed skating starting February 9th, Nordic combined events on February 11th, 17th, and 19th, and races in Rennrodeln, beginning February 8th.

Tickets for the events in Antholz are exclusively available through the official ticket shop at tickets.milanocortina2026.org. No tickets will be sold on-site, even on the day of the competitions.

The Paralympic Winter Games will follow the Olympic Games, taking place from March 6th to 15th, but the Paralympic competitions will not be held in Antholz/South Tyrol.

written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Germany dominated the medal table at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, particularly excelling in the sliding sports. Max Langenhan secured gold in the men’s singles luge, although Julia Taubitz triumphed in the women’s singles event. The German team similarly claimed gold in the mixed team relay, featuring Taubitz, Tobias Wendl, Tobias Arlt, Langenhan, Dajana Eitberger, and Magdalena Matschina.

Philipp Raimund delivered a surprise victory in the men’s normal ski jumping competition, bringing a relaxed approach to the sport and a special gift to his coach. The success continued for Germany with Christopher Grotheer taking bronze and Axel Jungk silver in the men’s skeleton, and Jacqueline Pfeifer adding a bronze in the women’s event. Susanne Kreher secured a silver in the women’s skeleton and, alongside Jungk, a silver in the mixed team event. A bronze medal in the mixed team skeleton completed Germany’s strong showing in the discipline.

Emma Aicher earned a silver medal in the women’s alpine downhill, and Kira Weidle-Winkelmann, alongside Aicher, secured another silver in the team alpine combination. Germany also took bronze in the biathlon mixed relay. Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt added a bronze in the men’s doubles luge, while Dajana Eitberger and Magdalena Matschina claimed silver in the women’s doubles.

Elsewhere in the games, Switzerland’s Franjo von Allmen won the men’s alpine downhill, and Sweden’s Frida Karlsson claimed gold in the women’s skiathlon. Italy’s Francesca Lollobrigida secured gold in the women’s 3000m speed skating event, and Norway’s Anna Odine Strøm won the women’s normal ski jumping competition. Japan’s Kira Kimura took gold in the men’s snowboard big air.

The United States’ Breezy Johnson won the women’s alpine downhill, while Norway’s Johannes Høsflot Klæbo secured gold in the men’s skiathlon. France won the biathlon mixed relay. Zuzana Maděrová of the Czech Republic and Benjamin Karl of Austria won gold in the women’s and men’s parallel giant slalom snowboarding events, respectively. Sander Eitrem of Norway won the men’s 5000m speed skating event.

Italy’s Federica Brignone won the women’s super-G alpine skiing event. Alessandro Hämmerle of Austria claimed gold in the men’s snowboard cross. The German team secured gold in the mixed team Rennrodeln event. Ilia Malinin, previously undefeated, experienced a disappointing performance in the figure skating competition, acknowledging he “messed up” his routine.

Norway continued its strong performance with Jens Lurås Oftebro winning gold in the Nordic combined normal hill event, and Frida Karlsson securing another gold in the women’s 10km cross-country skiing event. Jordan Stolz of the USA won gold in the men’s 1000m speed skating event. Domen Prevc of Slovenia won gold in the men’s large hill ski jumping competition.

The Winter Olympics officially opened on February 6th in Milan’s San Siro Stadium, with competitions continuing across 16 sports and 116 events. The schedule of events and medal decisions is available for review.

Katharina Schmid Olympic Disappointment: Ski Jump Exit & Tears | Bild.de

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor February 15, 2026
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Katharina Schmid, Germany’s flagbearer, experienced a heartbreaking end to her Olympic career with a crash during the women’s ski jumping competition at the Predazzo Olympic venue on Sunday evening. The 29-year-old, who announced her planned retirement at the end of the current season, finished 42nd after landing at 96.5 meters, failing to qualify for the second round. The competition was won by Norway’s Anna Odine Stroem, securing her first Olympic gold medal, following her victory on the Normal Hill. Her compatriot, Eirin Maria Kvandal, took silver, and Nika Prevc of Slovenia claimed the bronze. Schmid’s disappointing performance came despite her honor of carrying the German flag at the opening ceremony. “If you don’t have the form, then you also get this ugly headwind. I feel incredibly sorry for her,” said ski jumping legend Sven Hannawald in a livestream broadcast by ARD, a German public broadcaster. “What can you do? On the one hand, so many positive feelings and emotions with the honor of being the flagbearer, and then this…” The challenging wind conditions were a significant factor for several competitors. Hannawald noted a 3.5-meter-per-second tailwind during Schmid’s jump, which he suggested made a fine performance nearly impossible. Following her crash, Schmid attempted to maintain composure, acknowledging the crowd with a bow before visibly breaking down in tears. “It hurts so much, I didn’t want it to end like this,” she said, her voice choked with emotion. “I would have liked to have shown at least one more jump. You always wish for things to be different. Whether better conditions would have helped – I don’t realize. I just want to go home now, to my family. Thank God everyone is here.” Agnes Reisch finished tenth and Selina Freitag placed seventeenth, both hampered by unfavorable wind conditions during their first jumps. Juliane Seyfarth, competing in her first Olympic Games on the large hill, also struggled, falling on her second jump after a promising initial effort of 119 meters, ultimately finishing 23rd. The Olympic Games continue in Italy, with further ski jumping events scheduled throughout the week.

written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor
