Katharina Schmid, Germany’s flagbearer, experienced a heartbreaking end to her Olympic career with a crash during the women’s ski jumping competition at the Predazzo Olympic venue on Sunday evening. The 29-year-old, who announced her planned retirement at the end of the current season, finished 42nd after landing at 96.5 meters, failing to qualify for the second round. The competition was won by Norway’s Anna Odine Stroem, securing her first Olympic gold medal, following her victory on the Normal Hill. Her compatriot, Eirin Maria Kvandal, took silver, and Nika Prevc of Slovenia claimed the bronze. Schmid’s disappointing performance came despite her honor of carrying the German flag at the opening ceremony. “If you don’t have the form, then you also get this ugly headwind. I feel incredibly sorry for her,” said ski jumping legend Sven Hannawald in a livestream broadcast by ARD, a German public broadcaster. “What can you do? On the one hand, so many positive feelings and emotions with the honor of being the flagbearer, and then this…” The challenging wind conditions were a significant factor for several competitors. Hannawald noted a 3.5-meter-per-second tailwind during Schmid’s jump, which he suggested made a fine performance nearly impossible. Following her crash, Schmid attempted to maintain composure, acknowledging the crowd with a bow before visibly breaking down in tears. “It hurts so much, I didn’t want it to end like this,” she said, her voice choked with emotion. “I would have liked to have shown at least one more jump. You always wish for things to be different. Whether better conditions would have helped – I don’t realize. I just want to go home now, to my family. Thank God everyone is here.” Agnes Reisch finished tenth and Selina Freitag placed seventeenth, both hampered by unfavorable wind conditions during their first jumps. Juliane Seyfarth, competing in her first Olympic Games on the large hill, also struggled, falling on her second jump after a promising initial effort of 119 meters, ultimately finishing 23rd.
