Hideki Sato, the former President of Sega and a key architect of the company’s iconic video game consoles including the Mega Drive, died on Friday, February 13th, at the age of 75, Sega announced Monday.

Born in Hokkaido, Sato studied electrical engineering at Tokyo Metropolitan College before joining Sega Enterprises Ltd. In 1971, according to a statement released by Jiji Press. He began his career developing arcade games, including titles like Monaco GP, Star Jacker and Turbo, laying the groundwork for his later work in home console technology.

Sato’s influence grew significantly in 1983 when he led the development of the SC-3000 home gaming computer. From that point forward, he played a central role in the creation of nearly every Sega home gaming console, including the Master System, Mega Drive/Genesis, Sega Saturn, and Dreamcast, Sega confirmed in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).

He was described as “the father of Sega hardware” by IGN, a sentiment echoed by many in the gaming community. Sato’s research and development team were instrumental in designing almost every Sega arcade and home console.

In 2001, Sato became President of Sega during a period of significant change for the company. Facing increasing competition in the console market, he guided Sega’s strategic shift towards becoming a third-party software developer, ultimately leading to the company’s exit from console manufacturing. He served as chairman until 2003, according to reports from 4Gamer.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Hideki Sato,” Sega’s official X account stated. “His leadership helped lay the foundation of Sega, and his contributions had a significant and lasting impact on the entire gaming industry. We will always remember his contributions to our company, and all of us at Sega extend our deepest condolences as we honor his memory.”

Sato left the company in 2008 after serving as a board member. His death was first reported by Japanese games outlet Beep21 on Friday, February 13th. The exact age reported varies, with sources citing both 75 and 77 years old.
