Maryland Drivers Face โNation’s Fifth-highest Vehicle Registration Fees
MARYLAND (WBFF)โฃ – Maryland drivers areโค expressing growing frustration as vehicle registration fees have nearly doubled in theโ pastโ two years, now ranking theโข state fifth highest in the nation for such costs.
The current fee for the average vehicle is $120.50, trailing only North dakota ($162), โIllinois ($151), Oregon ($137), and โMontana ($127).This represents a significantโข increase compared to other states; Mississippi charges just $12.75 for registration, while Delaware’s fee is $40 and Pennsylvania’s is $48.New York and Texas both have fees around โ$50 – less than half of Maryland’s current rate.
“People cannot afford this โlevel of taxation,” statedโค Maryland Delegate Kathy Szeliga.
The fee hikes โcome after Maryland addressed a $3 billion budgetโ deficit earlier this year, opting to raise taxes and fees as a rapid revenue source. Critics contend the state should have prioritized spending cuts instead of placing the financial burden on residents.
The increased costs are prompting some Marylanders to consider relocating. “It’s crazy they make you want to go to another state,” said Baltimore driver Derrick Queensberry.
