Flick Expresses Outrage Over Yamal Injury, criticizes Spain‘s Handling of Players
Barcelona, September 13, 2025 – FC barcelona will be without star winger Lamine Yamal for their upcoming La Liga match against Valencia following an injury sustained during the recent international break. Head coach Hansi Flick used a pre-match press conference to voice his strong disapproval of how Yamal was managed while with the Spanish national team.
Flick revealed that Yamal reported to international duty already experiencing discomfort. “Yamal already had complaints when he went to the national team. He did not train between the matches and played 73 and 79 minutes. That is not taking care of the players,” the visibly frustrated coach stated.
The German manager directly criticized the approach of Spain’s national team coach, Luis de la Fuente. “Spain has the best players in the world,in every position. But you can’t deal with the players in this way, this realy can’t,” Flick explained.
Flick emphasized the importance of clear dialogue and collaboration between clubs and national teams, referencing his own experience managing the German national team. He noted attempts to connect with the Spanish staff, suggesting a breakdown in understanding. “I have had contact with the staff, but maybe my Spanish or English was not good enough. The communication should be better.”
Yamal’s injury is a notable blow to barcelona, potentially sidelining him not only for the Valencia match but also casting doubt on his availability for the crucial Champions League fixture against Newcastle United.
Flick also confirmed that midfielder Frenkie de Jong remains unavailable due to ongoing fitness concerns. However,Marc Bernal has been added to the matchday squad, though he is not expected to start.
With a mounting injury list and a demanding schedule encompassing both La Liga and Champions League commitments, Barcelona faces increasing pressure. Flick expressed his hope for improved cooperation with national federations to avoid similar situations in the future.
