Suspect at Large After Fresno Uber โคDriver Shot, Police say
Fresno police are searching forโฃ a suspect following a shooting thatโฃ critically injured an Uber driver early Friday morning. The driver, whose name has not beenโ released, was transported to a local hospital with gunshot โฃwoundsโ andโข remains in critical condition.
The incident underscores growing safety โคconcerns for rideshare drivers, prompting โcalls for increased vetting ofโ passengers and the wider adoption โof in-vehicle safety measures. While Uberโข and Lyft offerโค emergency features withinโ their apps, drivers and law enforcement officials say more preventative steps are needed to protect those working in the โgig economy.
according toโฃ police, the shooting occurred while the driver was working. The female passenger involved is currently not considered a suspect, but authoritiesโข are actively seeking details regarding the whereabouts of the alleged โคshooter, identifiedโค as Session.
“When I read this story, it was โฃimmediate shock that โcould’veโ been me,” said Shanker,โ an uber driver for approximately ten years. He expressed hope โคfor enhanced โขsafety protocols, specificallyโ advocating for “better vetting of the riders who come in.”
Fresno police are recommendingโ rideshare drivers install dashcams as a potential โdeterrent to violence. john โขHeffron, a driver for โฃboth โคUber and Lyft, has โalready implemented this measure. “It’s thought that maybe aโ passenger would see that he’sโ on videoโ and maybe will behave himself if he’s thinking or else,” Heffronโ stated.
Investigators are currentlyโ reviewing footage from the victim’s โdashcam.
Anyone with information regarding Session’s โขlocation is urgedโ to โcontact Fresno Police or submit an anonymous โคtip throughโข Valley Crimeโ Stoppers at https://valleycrimestoppers.org/submit-a-tip/.
